Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales Process Work
Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales Process
I started my design process researching various deluxe edition books and gathering inspiration from The Folio Society, Penguin Clothbound Classics, and Fingerprint Publishing Collectable Editions. I then created a list of recurring fairytale elements found throughout Grimm’s Fairy Tales, including princesses, castles, knights, forests, and flowers. I knew that I wanted the cover art and the slipcase design to be able to work together and interact in some way. Early in the process, I decided that the best way to achieve this was through a die-cut slipcase that would allow portions of the cover to show through.
Using these elements as a starting point, I explored various compositions for both the cover and the slipcase. I decided that the princess and the castle composition best expressed the dreamy, fantasy quality of the stories while also creating a striking image. From there, I experimented with color to create a magical yet elegant tone that would appeal to a collector audience. I built the designs in Adobe Illustrator, which allowed me to adjust and experiment with scale, rhythm, and spacing throughout the slipcase design. For the typography, I referenced my earlier research and chose a typeface that felt sleek and modern while still complementing the fantasy subject matter.
